Friday 2nd November - Do fat loss supplements work ?

I got an email yesterday askiing me if fat loss supplements really work.

This question leaves me challenged to answer it as there are so many variables that are actually involved with this but I want to state the obvious first.

No product, pill or potion is going to be of assistance in your efforts to lose bodyfat if you are not eating the correct range of foods in the right amounts at the right times. They also will be of little to no value if you are not exercising to utilize the "excess calories" that you are consuming.

I say excess because you actually need a certain amount of "good calories" to ensure that you body and brain are working at their optimal. It is the "excess" of this requirement that you will need to get rid of with an active lifestyle that will allow you to show definition.

Okay now to the pills on the market.
Most tablets, capsules, pills etc that are being marketed as fat metabolisers are really not designed to increase calorie expenditure.

Their goal is to influence your metabolism so that your body is using more calories then just through eating well or exercise alone. Most of the better products encourage a "different eating plan" to what you were on increasing the chances of improvement. The ingredients in them are mostly herbal and not pharmaceutical grade as Ephedra, the one major ingredient that was in most products in the late 90's was linked to some deaths and has since been banned from over the counter supplement products.

Do they work ?
The scientific community is still out on this one although each company has their own testing to prove efficacy and there are no end to the "before" and "after" shots of people who have used these products. Whether it was the product in isolation is questionable as most people also underwent major lifestyle changes increasing their result. I guess you will have to make your own decision but read my cautions below.

Would I recommend them to everyone - NO !

Who would I definitely NOT tell to use them ?
Anyone that is taking blood pressure medication.
Anyone that is taking medications that are listed on the various products.
Anyone that is on taking prescription medication and hasn't checked with their GP.
Anyone that is on the "pill" as certain ingredients in these products may interact with and reduce the efficacy of the "pill".

Who can take these products ?
Most people that are not listed above THAT are eating healthy and regularly active.

Note that most product companies appear to influence the amount of product being taken so that when you are finished your product your adrenal systems go into recovery from the excess work that they have been doing. As a result you will start to feel tired as your body goes through a normal period where it tries to regain a level of "balance". This normally triggers an increased desire to regain the heightened state while you were on the product.

Result = More sales for them. Be careful as it could mean adrenal fatigue for you.
